Old botanical illustrations have a lovely quality of attention. These are the artists and tools behind this small corner of Petunia.
The story plant
Illustrations of the story plant were generated with ChatGPT in the style of 19th-century botanical engravings. They are not historical plates. They were made on 23 and 24 September 2026 for the example plant history on the homepage, following the engraved line and watercolour wash of the plates in the Petunia app. The photos on that story’s phone were generated with ChatGPT too; they are not photographs of a real plant.
The petunia
The petunia at the top of the homepage was generated with ChatGPT on 21 October 2026, in the style of Basilius Besler’s Hortus Eystettensis (1613): engraved line under a hand-applied watercolour wash. It is not a historical plate; Besler never drew a petunia.
The Android robot
The Android robot on the Android buttons is reproduced or modified from work created and shared by Google and used according to terms described in the Creative Commons 3.0 Attribution License. Android is a trademark of Google LLC. iPhone is a trademark of Apple Inc., registered in the U.S. and other countries. Petunia is not yet listed on Google Play or the App Store, so the buttons are our own rather than the official store badges.
The app preview
The app images on this website are real Android development-build captures from controlled beta testing on 20 September 2026. They show the garden list, a plant page, a saved personal note, the care profile and care log, the add and log menus, the camera identification steps, a growing space, Settings, a question being asked, and two example conversations. The notes belong to a test garden, not a customer. All of these captures date from when the app was called Lilly, so they still show the old name.
Some screens appear whole inside a drawn phone frame. Whole screens still show Android’s status bar and the development build’s floating settings button. Other screens are cropped to make the relevant interaction readable and to exclude Android controls, development overlays, and unrelated portions of the screen. The visible app interface and words have not been redrawn. The phone frame and its camera dot, the labels, and the explanatory captions are part of the website. Each screen has an Enlarge link to the whole capture.
The plant history on the homepage is an example year. Its dates, the plant’s owner and the conversation are illustrative. The phone in that story shows no screenshots: its screens are rebuilt in HTML from the app’s own source code, with the app’s words, layout, colours and type, filled in with the example’s details. One picture differs from the app: where the app shows a catalogue photo of the species, the story shows its own illustration of the plant. Petunia’s replies there were written for the example; the final one is adapted from a real answer given during the beta test.
The real screens elsewhere on the homepage show specific behavior observed during that beta test: Petunia referred to a recorded watering and drainage note, and to a saved room and window note. These are examples, not live advice about your plants or a guarantee that every answer is correct. Plant-record and offline behavior were still being improved in this development build. The screenshots do not establish release readiness; the app’s appearance and behavior may change.
